How Breast Weight Affects Your Health and Posture

As October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a timely reminder for all of us to take our health seriously, starting with regular self-checks to catch the early signs of breast cancer. While breast health is top of mind this month, it’s equally important to consider another aspect of breast care: the impact of breast weight on your overall health and posture. Often overlooked, breast weight and proper support play a crucial role in how we move, feel, and engage in our daily lives. In context of breast weight, these implications tend to be greatest amongst the heavier breasted population and few would know to contact a women’s health physiotherapist to discuss the conservative management of their breast weight.

Impact of Poor Support

Poorly supported breasts, particularly in women with larger busts, can lead to discomfort and various health issues. These range from breast pain to musculoskeletal problems like upper back stiffness and tension. In fact, a slouched posture caused by the weight of unsupported breasts can even affect breathing patterns and put strain on the pelvic floor, contributing to problems like prolapse or urinary leakage.

Psychological and Physical Effects

The physical toll of breast weight is matched by its psychological impact. A lack of support can negatively affect confidence and body image, reducing the likelihood of participating in physical activities. Additionally, women may experience reduced running performance, with shorter strides and less efficient upper body movement. Addressing this issue early on can empower women to stay active and maintain a positive self-image.

Importance of Proper Fit

Unfortunately, a research group in breast health in 2012 found that 70-80% of women were wearing incorrectly fitting bras. Correctly fitting bras not only support the breast tissue better and give us a better silhouette, they also tend to improve our overall body. This leads to better natural recruitment of back extensors, abdominals, pelvic floor and gluts. Contrary to popular opinion, the breasts are not supported by the pectoral muscles or indeed by any anterior musculature with that role falling solely on skin. This lack of muscular support further emphasises the importance of a good fit and an optimum posture. A well fitted bra can also help align your body, promote better posture, and activate the muscles that support your back, core, and pelvic floor.
